The Red Barn hostel is "low-key" and easy going -- "a great place to catch your breath after being on the road a long time." Located in Milwaukee's suburb of Greendale, the hostel is housed in a historic barn and sits right on the Milwaukee Oakleaf Bicycle Trail.  Hiking trails are also nearby.

Milwaukee, the "City of Festivals," offers something different nearly every weekend of the summer.  Visit several excellent museums or the Harley Davidson Motorcycle factory.  Take one of three free brewery tours, or visit the Boerner Botanical Gardens, among the largest outdoor gardens in the world.

NOTE: Red Barn is currently closed for the season.

Just a 35 minute drive from downtown Milwaukee, HI Wellspring is a retreat and conference center along the beautiful Milwaukee River.  There's good canoeing in the spring, and Lake Michigan is just 10 miles away.  Hike the trails in Kettle Moraine State Forest Northern Unit through kettles (bowl shaped depressions), eskers (snake like ridges), drumlins (elongated, rounded hills), and other unique glacier landforms.

In the winter enjoy skiing at the Sunburst Ski Area, just a few miles away.  Don't miss the nearby Horicon Marsh Wildlife Refuge.  Participate in the organic garden program at Wellspring from April through October.

Open year-round for individuals and groups.  Spacious yet cozy home atmosphere for dining, relaxing and meeting other hostellers; large, fully equipped kitchen, quiet country setting; campfire and volleyball net.

Tools Forthcoming Wisconsin Hostels Eagle and Monches

We are renovating two historic farmhouses in the Kettle Moraine State Forest.  Council volunteers are working on houses in Eagle and Monches, both within 40 miles of Milwaukee.  We are always looking for eager volunteers to help us finish these projects.

Future Plans

The council has formed a committee that is working on developing a summer hostel in the city of Milwaukee.  Our committee needs more eager volunteers.  Please contact us if you are interested in helping out.
